What's included in a boiler service

• Visual inspection of the boiler, flue and pipework for signs of damage, leaks or corrosion
• Checking the flue is correctly fitted, sealed and clear
• A combustion analysis with a flue gas analyser, to confirm the boiler is burning gas safely and efficiently
• Checking gas pressure and gas rate against the manufacturer's figures
• Checking the safety devices and controls work correctly
• Inspecting and cleaning components where the manufacturer requires it, including the condensate trap
• Checking system pressure and the expansion vessel
• A written service record for your warranty and your own records

Why service your boiler every year?

Safety. A badly burning boiler can produce carbon monoxide, which you can't see or smell. A service checks the combustion and the flue. You should also have a working carbon monoxide alarm.

Warranty. Most manufacturers only honour the warranty if the boiler has been serviced every year by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Fewer breakdowns. Worn parts and early leaks are much cheaper to fix at a planned service than in a January breakdown.

When to book

Any time of year is fine, but late summer and early autumn are ideal, so the boiler is checked before the heating goes on for winter. If your boiler is under warranty, book the service around the anniversary of the installation date.
