Solar PV installation

Solar panel installation across the North East

Hasmart is a South Shields solar company with its own roofers and electricians. We design, fit and commission solar panel systems for homes and businesses across Tyne and Wear, County Durham and Northumberland, and we completed over 200 installs last year.

Why homeowners choose Hasmart for solar

  • Our own team, start to finish. The roofers who fix your panels and the electricians who wire them work for us. We don't pass your job to a subcontractor you've never met.
  • We don't rush it. Even on smaller systems we allow two days on site with a team of three, so the roof work, cable runs and commissioning are done properly and your home is left tidy.
  • Fully accredited. MCS certified for solar PV and batteries, NAPIT registered for the electrical work, and TrustMark registered.
  • Local. We're based at One Trinity Green in South Shields and cover the whole of the North East, so we're close by if you ever need us after the install.

What's included in a Hasmart solar installation

Every system is designed for your roof and your electricity use rather than picked off a shelf. A typical installation includes:

  • A free survey to check the roof, its pitch and direction, shading, the condition of the tiles and the space for an inverter and battery
  • A system design showing panel layout and the expected yearly generation
  • Scaffolding, fitted and removed for you
  • Panels, mounting system, inverter, isolators and cabling
  • Bird protection where it's needed
  • Notifying or applying to Northern Powergrid, the local network operator, on your behalf (G98 or G99)
  • Testing and commissioning, plus setting up the monitoring app on your phone
  • Your MCS certificate and a handover pack with all the paperwork and warranties

Do solar panels work in the North East?

Yes. Solar panels generate electricity from daylight, not heat, so they work on bright cloudy days as well as sunny ones. The long summer days in the North East make up for shorter winter ones, and panels actually run slightly more efficiently when it's cool.

What matters most is the roof: which way it faces, its pitch, and whether trees or nearby buildings cast shade. South-facing roofs give the most generation overall, but east and west-facing roofs work well too and spread generation across the morning and evening, when many households use more power. We'll show you the expected generation for your roof before you commit to anything.

Solar with a battery

Without a battery, any electricity you don't use straight away goes to the grid. A battery stores that spare power for the evening, so you use more of what you generate. Many of our customers add a battery at the same time as their panels, and we can add one to an existing system later. Read more about battery storage.

How much do solar panels cost?

The price depends on the number of panels, the type of roof and how easy it is to reach, whether you add a battery, and the inverter you choose. Rather than guess, use our online solar calculator: pick your options and you'll see an estimate straight away. We confirm the final price at the free survey before any work starts.

0% VAT. Solar panels and batteries installed on homes currently have 0% VAT, under government relief that runs until 31 March 2027.

Getting paid for the electricity you export

Because Hasmart is MCS certified, your system will qualify for the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG). That means energy suppliers will pay you for the electricity you send back to the grid. Rates vary a lot between suppliers and tariffs, so it's worth shopping around. We're happy to talk you through the options at handover.

  1. Instant estimateUse the calculator to see a price for the system you want.
  2. Free surveyWe visit, check the roof and your electrics, and confirm the design and price.
  3. Network approvalWe handle the Northern Powergrid paperwork. Larger systems need approval before we can fit them.
  4. InstallationScaffold goes up, then our team fits and commissions the system, usually over two days.
  5. HandoverWe show you the app, explain how to get the most from it, and give you your MCS certificate and documents.

Questions we get asked

Do I need planning permission for solar panels?

Most homes don't. Roof-mounted solar panels on houses are usually allowed under permitted development. There are exceptions, for example listed buildings and some homes in conservation areas or with flat roofs. We check at survey and tell you if permission is needed.

How long does a solar installation take?

Most home installations take two days on site with a team of three, after the scaffold has gone up. Bigger or more complicated jobs can take longer, and we'll tell you at survey.

Will panels work on an east or west-facing roof?

Yes. East and west-facing roofs generate a little less over the year than a south-facing one, but they spread generation across the morning and evening. Many systems use panels on both sides of the roof.

Do you deal with Northern Powergrid?

Yes. Every system connected to the grid has to be notified to, or approved by, the local network operator. We do the G98 notification or G99 application for you.

Can you add panels or a battery to my existing system?

Usually, yes. We can add a battery to most existing solar systems, and in many cases we can extend the array. We'll check your existing inverter and paperwork at survey.

What paperwork do I get?

You'll get an MCS certificate, the electrical installation certificate, the network operator confirmation, product warranties and a handover pack explaining your system.
