FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Answers to the questions we're asked most about solar, batteries, EV chargers, air conditioning, heating and electrical work. Can't find yours? Call us.

General

Is the online price the final price?

It's an estimate based on typical homes. We confirm the final price at a free survey visit before any work starts, and we'll explain anything that changes it.

Is the survey free?

Yes. There's no charge for a survey and no obligation to go ahead.

Which areas do you cover?

The whole of the North East, including South Tyneside, Sunderland, Newcastle, Gateshead, North Tyneside, County Durham, Northumberland and Teesside. See areas we cover.

Do you use subcontractors?

Our electricians, roofers and heating and cooling engineers work directly for Hasmart.

Which accreditations do you hold?

MCS (solar PV and batteries), Gas Safe (974743), NAPIT (34005), TrustMark and F-Gas.

Solar panels

Do I need planning permission for solar panels?

Most homes don't. Roof-mounted solar panels on houses are usually allowed under permitted development. There are exceptions, for example listed buildings and some homes in conservation areas or with flat roofs. We check at survey and tell you if permission is needed.

How long does a solar installation take?

Most home installations take two days on site with a team of three, after the scaffold has gone up. Bigger or more complicated jobs can take longer, and we'll tell you at survey.

Will panels work on an east or west-facing roof?

Yes. East and west-facing roofs generate a little less over the year than a south-facing one, but they spread generation across the morning and evening. Many systems use panels on both sides of the roof.

Battery storage

Can I add a battery to my existing solar panels?

In most cases, yes. We check your existing inverter and system at survey and recommend the simplest way to add storage.

What size battery do I need?

That depends on how much electricity you use in the evening and overnight, how much solar you generate, and your tariff. We look at your usage and size the battery to fit. A bigger battery isn't always better value.

Is a battery worth it without solar panels?

It can be. With a time-of-use tariff, a battery charges when electricity is cheap and powers your home when it's expensive. How much you save depends on the gap between the cheap and peak rates on your tariff.

EV chargers

How long does it take to install a home charger?

A standard home installation usually takes around half a day. It can take longer if the cable run is long or the supply needs upgrading, and we'll tell you at survey.

Can my house take an EV charger?

Most can. We check your supply, main fuse and consumer unit. If the supply is tight, load management usually solves it. Occasionally the network operator needs to upgrade the supply first, and we'll arrange that with you.

Can I charge my car from my solar panels?

Yes, with a solar-compatible charger. It can be set to use spare solar generation, or mix solar with grid power when you need the car charged by a certain time.

Air conditioning

Can air conditioning heat my home as well?

Yes. Most modern split systems are reversible heat pumps and heat efficiently in winter as well as cooling in summer.

How long does it take to install air conditioning?

A single-room system usually takes a day. Multi-room and commercial systems take longer depending on pipe runs and access.

Where does the outdoor unit go?

Usually on an outside wall or on the ground nearby, as close as practical to the indoor unit. We'll agree the position with you at survey, taking noise, access and appearance into account.

Boilers and heating

How long does a boiler installation take?

Swapping one boiler for a similar one in the same place usually takes a day. Moving the boiler, re-routing the flue or converting to a combi typically takes two to three days.

Will I need to replace my radiators?

Not usually. We check the radiators and pipework at survey and only recommend changes where they're needed, for example a radiator that's leaking or too small for the room.

Do you register the warranty?

Yes. We register the boiler with the manufacturer once it's installed. To keep the warranty valid, the boiler normally needs servicing every year, which we can do for you.

Boiler repair

Which boilers do you repair?

We repair all the common makes of gas boiler found in UK homes. If a specialist manufacturer repair is needed, we'll tell you.

Is it worth repairing an old boiler?

Sometimes. A small repair on a boiler in good condition is usually worth doing. If the boiler is old, keeps breaking down, or needs an expensive part, a new boiler may cost less in the long run. We'll give you both options.

Why does my boiler keep losing pressure?

Usually because there's a leak somewhere in the system, the pressure relief valve is letting by, or the expansion vessel has lost its charge. Topping it up only treats the symptom, so it's worth getting it checked.

Landlord gas safety

How often do I need a gas safety certificate?

Every 12 months. You can have the check done up to two months before the deadline and keep the original expiry date.

How long does a gas safety check take?

Typically 30 to 60 minutes for a property with a boiler and a hob, longer if there are more appliances.

What's a CP12?

CP12 is the old name for the landlord gas safety record. The name is still widely used. The record lists each appliance checked and the results.

Electrical

How often does a rental property need an EICR?

In England, at least every five years, or sooner if the previous report says so. Tenants must be given a copy.

How long does an EICR take?

For a typical house, around three to four hours. The power is off for some of that time while circuits are tested.

Do I get a certificate for new electrical work?

Yes. You'll get an Electrical Installation Certificate or Minor Works Certificate, and notifiable work is registered with Building Control through NAPIT.

Commercial solar

How big a system do we need?

It depends on your daytime electricity use and the roof space you have. We size the system to how much power you use, so most of the solar is used on site rather than exported.

Will installation disrupt our business?

Most of the work happens on the roof. We plan scaffold, deliveries and the electrical connection around your operating hours, and keep any shutdown of the power as short as possible.

Can you add battery storage?

Yes. Batteries can store midday surplus for later in the day, or help manage peak demand. We'll tell you whether a battery makes financial sense for your site.
