Commercial solar PV

Commercial solar PV for North East businesses

Businesses use most of their electricity during the day, which is when solar panels generate. That makes commercial solar one of the most direct ways to cut energy costs. Hasmart designs and installs solar PV and battery storage for businesses and organisations across the North East, using our own roofers and electricians.

Who we work with

Offices, warehouses and industrial units, shops, hotels and hospitality, schools, care homes, farms and agricultural buildings, and public sector buildings.

Flat roofs and pitched roofs

Many commercial buildings have flat roofs. These usually suit ballasted or low-profile east-west mounting systems, which fit more panels on the roof, spread generation through the working day and avoid drilling through the waterproofing. On pitched and profiled metal roofs we use fixing systems designed for that roof type.

Hasmart has its own commercial roofing team, so we can check the roof's condition before the panels go on, and repair or upgrade it where needed. That's much easier to do before a solar array is in the way.

What our commercial service covers

  • A site survey and assessment of how much electricity you use and when, from half-hourly data where it's available
  • System design with generation estimates and the expected savings
  • Structural and roof condition checks
  • The G99 application to Northern Powergrid, including export limitation where the network needs it
  • Installation by our own team, planned around your business to keep disruption low
  • Commissioning, monitoring setup, and the full handover and compliance paperwork
  • Battery storage and EV charge points designed alongside the solar if you want them

The financial case

The savings come mainly from using your own solar electricity instead of buying it at commercial rates. Any surplus can be exported. Depending on your business structure, solar may also qualify for capital allowances, so speak to your accountant about the tax treatment. We'll give you the generation figures and costs you need to work out the payback.

Grid connection (G99)

Commercial systems almost always need approval from Northern Powergrid under G99 before they're connected. Approval can take weeks, and sometimes the network needs export limits or upgrades. We handle the application and talk to the network operator for you, and we start the process early so it doesn't hold up your project.

Questions we get asked

How big a system do we need?

It depends on your daytime electricity use and the roof space you have. We size the system to how much power you use, so most of the solar is used on site rather than exported.

Will installation disrupt our business?

Most of the work happens on the roof. We plan scaffold, deliveries and the electrical connection around your operating hours, and keep any shutdown of the power as short as possible.

Can you add battery storage?

Yes. Batteries can store midday surplus for later in the day, or help manage peak demand. We'll tell you whether a battery makes financial sense for your site.
