Electric vehicle charging

Home and workplace EV charger installation

A home charger is the cheapest and easiest way to charge an electric car. Our own NAPIT registered electricians install EV chargers for homes and businesses across the North East, including chargers that can run on your own solar power.

What we check before we fit a charger

A charger draws a lot of power for hours at a time, so the survey matters as much as the installation. We check:

  • Your incoming supply and main fuse, and whether the house can take the extra load
  • Your consumer unit and earthing arrangement, including the protection needed against faults on the supply
  • The best place for the charger and the cable route to it
  • Whether load management is needed so the charger doesn't overload the supply when other appliances are on
  • Whether you have, or plan to have, solar panels or a battery that the charger can work with

Smart charging and solar

Smart chargers let you charge when electricity is cheapest, which pairs well with off-peak EV tariffs. If you have solar panels, a solar-compatible charger can top up the car with your own spare generation instead of exporting it for a few pence. We'll set the charger up to suit your tariff and how you use the car.

Faster charging with a three-phase supply

Most homes have a single-phase supply, which suits a standard 7kW home charger. Some homes and most businesses have a three-phase supply, which can support faster 11kW or 22kW chargers if your car can use them. We'll tell you what your supply supports at survey.

Chargers for businesses

We install chargers for staff, fleet and customer parking, from a single charger to several points with load management. If your building has solar panels, or you're thinking about them, we can design the chargers and solar together. See commercial solar.

Certification and paperwork

Every installation is tested and certified, and because we're NAPIT registered (34005) we notify the work under the Building Regulations for you. We also notify Northern Powergrid where needed, and set up the charger's app before we leave.

Questions we get asked

How long does it take to install a home charger?

A standard home installation usually takes around half a day. It can take longer if the cable run is long or the supply needs upgrading, and we'll tell you at survey.

Can my house take an EV charger?

Most can. We check your supply, main fuse and consumer unit. If the supply is tight, load management usually solves it. Occasionally the network operator needs to upgrade the supply first, and we'll arrange that with you.

Can I charge my car from my solar panels?

Yes, with a solar-compatible charger. It can be set to use spare solar generation, or mix solar with grid power when you need the car charged by a certain time.

Do you install chargers at businesses?

Yes. We install single and multiple charge points for workplaces, with load management and, where it suits, solar.
